Original Pride: The Satyrs Motorcycle Club
Friendship and bikes united gay men long before Pride
by Anthony Glassman
The Stonewall Riots in New York City in 1969 are viewed as the beginning of the modern gay equal rights movement, the dawn of Pride with a capital "P."
Fifteen years before that, though, on the opposite of the country, gay men were uniting, joined by common interests: masculinity, camaraderie and, most of all, motorcycles.
The year 1954 saw the birth of Los Angeles' Satyrs Motorcycle Club, the first gay motorcycle club in the nation and the yardstick by which all others would be measured. Fifty years later, group president Scott Bloom created a compendium of photos, archival footage and interviews to create Original Pride: The Satyrs Motorcycle Club.
A fitting paean to the first of hundreds of such clubs, which years before the social acceptance of gay bars was one of the few "safe spaces" for gay men to meet, the film examines the life of the club from the point of view of the men who were there.
The heart of the leather community, the motorcycle clubs and other leather clubs were there at the dawn of AIDS, raising funds to help their brothers.
Original Pride is an in-depth, loving anthropological look at the club that started it all, that gave life to the implied homoeroticism of films like The Wild Ones with Marlon
Brando. It's a look at life before Gay Pride parades and festivals, when bars, if they could be found, were raided by cops so regularly that patrons set their clocks to the arrival of billy club-wielding homophobes, when bar owners would pay bribes to minimize the number of raids.
In an era when the "gay" character in any movie died in the last reel, when gay men routinely married and had children and lived lies, the Satyrs found love, acceptance and brotherhood, and they've continued to do so for over half a century.
Scott Bloom's Original Pride: The Satyrs Motorcycle Club will be shown twice on Saturday, April 30 as part of CLAW, the Cleveland Leather Awareness Weekend. The first showing, at 2 pm, will be at the Cleveland Museum of Art, 11150 East Blvd. The screening coincides with CLAW's museum field trip, one of three available.
The second screening will follow the International Leather Family Dinner that night at the Embassy Suites Hotel in downtown Cleveland.
